Passivation

Passivation is a classic anode treatment to improve corrosion resistance of metals, comparing to not treated parts, through completing natural formation of metal oxides surface layer. This type of anticorrosion protection works well usually for not aggressive storage conditions.
Passivation of metals became worldwide used practically at all industries as a simple accessible way of mild metal corrosion protection at 40th-50th, following then entered and put into effect due American Standards.
The best understanding of the Passivation process, its proper implementation and its limitations, is provided by the ASTM A 967 – 01 Standard Specification for Chemical Passivation Treatments for Stainless Steel Parts, which is the directory, practically used for the purpose in the industry worldwide:
“Stainless steels are autopassivating in the sense that the protective passive film is formed spontaneously on exposure to air or moisture. … The passive film may be improved by chemical treatments that provide an oxidizing environment …” “In this specification, passivation…is defined as the chemical treatment of a stainless steel with a mild oxidant, such as a nitric acid solution, for the purpose of the removal of free iron or other foreign matter, but which is generally not effective in removal of heat tint or oxide scale on stainless steel.”
Our Company provides passivation services for all brands of Stainless Steels and for other metals, following regulations of ASTM A 967 – 01 Standard, subject to understanding of the method limitations, derivated from the Standard’s definitions.
The size of parts treated at our Passivation lines may be from tens microns to 500 mm and more, with capacity up to tens thousands units per 8-hours shift, dependings on parts dimensions.
