Nitinol is half Nickel half Titanium alloy, which unique properties, shape memory and superplastisity, were discovered by Buehler and Wang at Naval Ordnance Laboratory, USA, at the end of 50th of the 20th century. After decades of researches and trials, now Nitinol is widely used in many commercial applications exploited special features of this metal. Its widespread use in medical appliances is obliged as well to high biocompatibility of the Alloy.
Electro-polishing is considered to be an essential stage of the Nitinol parts manufacturing, since, when properly electro-polished, the metal forms a dense non-porosive protective layer of Titanium Oxide, providing the parts with long-term stability of their special properties.
To make task tough, it is the dense Titanium Oxide layer formation, which causes difficulties in Nitinol’s electropolishing, alongside to necessity to suppress the formation of green-black nickel oxide, all this after removing poor metallurgically-originated layer of metal oxides.
Finish Line has developed well controlled Electropolishing Process for abdominate surgical Nitinol springs (view pic.) after their thermal shaping, and run the Process periodically during few years, at capacity of thousands units per day. The line was operated for other customers as well, and is ready for new tasks, subject to adjusting the Process for any specific requirements.
During development the Process for the Nitinol springs, we have faced the customer’s need to ensure their pre-designed opening force. The task was successfully solved entering control of the spring weight, which we proved to be statistically main regulator of the opening force, see more.
In another case, we faced once more the customer’s need to manage mechanical properties of a Nitinol part, this time a strip for a cordial device. A sharply focused research was conducted by mutual efforts with a Customer, which led us to Electro-polishing parameters, successfully controlling desired curve, see more.
