CoCr and Alloys

Cobalt-Chrome (Co-Cr) is a metal alloy of Cobalt (59 to 68%), Chromium (27 to 30%), Molybdenum (5 to 7%), and other important elements (less than 4%). Following ASTM F75, this metal “is a non-magnetic CoCrMo alloy exhibiting high strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent wear resistance”.
The CoCrMo alloys are especially used where high stiffness or a highly polished and extremely wear-resistant material is required, as well as in situations where material quality is imperative as parts are heavily loaded and subject to fatigue.
CoCrMo alloys are widely used for aero- and land-based gas turbines (fuel nozzles and blades) and for medical applications, like prosthetic implant devices, knee implants, hip joints, orthopedic implants and dental prosthetics. In recent time, CoCr alloys have been intensively explored for cordial purposes.
Electro-polishing of CoCr parts might contribute to all those heavy industrial applications. However, during the period when they were mostly developed, design engineers have yet not had this surface treatment process in their stock of instrumentation. In contrast, for resent applications, like cordial devices, research and design engineers turn to Electropolishing as a powerful instrument to bring CoCr surface into line with the requirements.
