Surface treatment of dental implants by sandblasting with large grid following by acid etching (SLA), pioneered by Straumann Holding AG in early 90th, is until now the most widespread method in the world for formation of surface treatment of dental implants. The method has many variations, through adjusting its general approach to specific tasks of a particular manufacturer.
The method is widely acknowledged as providing the most successful micro-topography of the implants’ surface, though its unability to assure absolute removal of blasting leftovers is recognized as well.
Acronym SLA has become common definition and means practicing this technological approach.
